Breast Cancer Ribbon- Pink Ribbon

Breast cancer is a highly treatable disease as now breast cancer survival rate is of 85 percent. Since early diagnosis is an important key to successful treatment, doctors say it's important that all women over the age of 18 do a Breast Self-Exam (BSE) every month, two or three days after their menstrual cycle. In addition, women between 20 and 39 should have a clinical breast exam at least every three years and women 40 and older should have a mammogram every year.

It is estimated that 95% of breast cancer is detected through personal check-up. The breast cancer personal check-up includes checking for lumps in the breasts after each menstrual period, puckering the skin, and checking for nipple retraction or discharge. For consistent result, every woman should do a breast cancer personal check-up at the same time every month. Various other techniques such as mammography, thermography, ultrasonography, computerized tomography scan etc, can also help detect breast cancer.

An extensive study conducted by the American Cancer Institute showed that besides various other cancers, obesity significantly increased the risk of breast cancer also.

"Women who are obese after menopause have a 50% higher relative risk of breast cancer," says Michael Thun, MD, vice-president of epidemiology and surveillance research for the American Cancer Society (ACS). To prevent this, make sure to check your Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine if weight has become health risk.

Dr David Heber, M.D., Ph.D. and author of "What Color is Your Diet", says "It appears that diet has its most significant effects after the cancer has already formed, acting to inhibit or stimulate the growth of that cancer". In the past few years, a number of women have turned to green vegetables in an effort to attempt to lower their risk of breast cancer. Increasingly, though, researchers are looking to another green food in an effort to cut breast cancer risk—green tea. One significant study indicated that green tea extract prevents breast cancer cells from producing a chemical that leads to tumors. In fact, drinking less than six tablespoons of green tea a day appeared to cut a woman’s risk for breast cancer by as much as 30 percent.

Drinking, smoking and birth pills

Women are also advised to decrease their consumption of alcoholic drinks, control smoking, do more of exercise and decrease the use of birth control pills. If you have a child on breastfeed, prefer it as breastfeeding has been found to decrease the risk of breast cancer development.

Early menstruation

A research suggests that puberty could be a crucial time for development of breast cancer. Regular exercise is believed to delay the beginning of a girl's first menstrual period. That is when the body creates hormones that stimulate the majority of breast cancers. According to a study, just 4 hours of weekly exercise can postpone hormone surges for up to 12 months. So a delay in beginning of menstruation cycle can prevent breast cancer from some extent. Since exercise can lower hormone activity, it can reduce risk of breast cancer, even after a girl starts having periods.

The above mentioned points are something that could be controlled and may be avoided. Besides this, people all around the globe is becoming aware of this disease and now they are willing to show that they care and support. Now the awareness to its risks and the understanding of the prevention measures that need to be taken on a regular basis has increased over the years and had probably saved many lives. Every October is the international breast cancer awareness month, this is the time to try and do the most to increase the public awareness of this disease, and educate woman about the ways they can fight breast cancer, this month is also dedicated to raising money for the many different organizations and foundations that are working all year round on helping victims of breast cancer, some of these patients have no money and no funds they can use to try and treat the cancer, and these organizations help them get the support that they need.

Pink Ribbon

These days almost every worthy cause finds itself a proper ribbon. Some people might wonder as to why is it important to use the pink ribbon and join the fight against breast cancer? It simply its shows that you are willing to give a little of your time or energy to try and educate more people, to warn some others and  just by doing so may contribute to saving a life. So all you got to do is just place one of these pink ribbons on your shirt or jacket, and show the solidarity you have with the breast cancer patients, the victims and the family and friends of those who have been effected by this terrible disease.
