Throughout the world, if there is one disease most of the people are afraid of, is CANCER. It is one of the most deadly diseases which has been proved fatal for human beings. Cancer is considered to be a ‘metabolic disease’, as it greatly affect the metabolism of the body.
There are more than hundred types of cancer diagnosed so far and each one has been classified by the type of cell initially affected. Human organs are made up of billions of cells, which are the smallest structural and typically microscopic functional unit of an organism. When cancer affects someone, the abnormal and unusual cells in his body starts growing and spreading at a very fast and alarming rate. Such altered cells divide uncontrollably, thus forming lump of tissues known as tumor. Such tumors often interfere with the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems, resulting in the release of hormones which generally alter body function. One thing to be noted here that if the tumor does not grow rapidly and stays in one place are often considered harmless.
In our day to day life, normal cells divide and grow to a certain level and after a certain time, they die. Such programmed cell death is known as apoptosis. If we get an external or internal injury, our cells start the healing process by multiplying themselves. But if the cells are affected by cancer, they don’t follow such programmatic death even after this healing process is over, thus forming a mass of uncontrollable developing cells.
Thus the tumors so formed can also be considered quite dangerous when a process of invasion occurs by the affected cells, when they manage to move throughout the body using the blood or lymphatic systems and hence destroying healthy tissues in the body. Another thing which occurs dangerously is that when such cell manages to divide and grow, making new blood vessels to feed itself in a process called angiogenesis.
Cancer is capable of spreading to other parts of the body. Sometimes a part of a tumor breaks off and travel to a distant area. Once that piece of the tumor comes to a stop in another area of the body, it will continue to grow and can create a new tumor. When cancer spreads like this, it is called metastasis, and the result is a serious condition that is very difficult to treat.
Cancer, if detected at an early stage, still has a chance to be cured but if it reaches to next levels, it might be proved fatal. According to WHO (World Health Organization) millions of people all over the world, having cancer, die every year. Even in a developed country like America, one death out of four is reported to be caused by this disease. Research all over the world is being done to find a complete cure of cancer, but we haven’t yet found anything to eliminate this disease from the face of earth.
